Research funding agencies play a key role in stricto sensu post-graduate studies. The PPGPSI receives different types of grants from three Brazilian agencies: CAPES (Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel), CNPq (National Council for Scientific and Technological Development), and FAPESB (Foundation for Research Support in the State of Bahia).
The Academic Master currently has 15 CAPES grants, three CNPq grants, and seven FAPESB grants. The Doctorate programme has 13 grants from CAPES, one from CNPq and six grants from FAPESB. The Program also has five postdoctoral CAPES fellows, and seven permanent professors with Research Productivity grants from CNPq. The great majority of permanent professors and collaborators supervise Scientific Initiation students, whose grants are financed by CNPq, FAPESB and UFBA itself. In total, about 40 students in Scientific Initiation and Technical Support are supervised by PPGPSI professors.
In addition to the grants, the three agencies also grant financial assistance to carry out several of the research projects coordinated by PPGPSI professors. Currently there are about 20 funded projects carried out in the Program. It is also worth mentioning the importance of CAPES, CNPq and FAPESB in encouraging the qualification of the professors of the Program through postdoctoral fellowships both in Brazil, and abroad and the financial assistance for participation in national and international events. Finally, CAPES and CNPq also contribute significantly to the qualification of students and to the internationalization of the Program through the granting of “Sandwich” Doctorate Grants abroad.
